The Raspberry

May 20th, 2005

During the first few weeks after Laura came into the kitchen waving a pee-drenched stick with a big plus sign on it, we spent long hours reading advice and articles on the web about pregnancy and child development. Kate gave us some nifty web sites to check out, and one of them (BabyCentre) has a nice week-to-week breakdown of how things are going in there. At four or five weeks along, they described the embryo as being about as large as a raspberry, and, due to my whimsical and fruit-loving nature, I’ve called our child-to-be “the raspberry” ever since.

Luckily, I no longer have to apply the nickname sight unseen, because our first ultrasound was on the 18th, which was undoubtedly the best birthday present I’ve ever received. Being a geek as well as a father-to-be I’ve posted the pictures of the ultrasound on the raspberry’s web page at:

The meanings of the words 'liberal' and 'conservative' have been so mercilessly abused over the last twenty years that they offer more information about the person who employs them as insults than they do about the person on whose head they fall like stones.
